World Series Game 7 Draws 51M Audience Members In the US, Canada and Japan Regions.

The nail-biting extra-inning matchup that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Blue Jays 5-4 drew a combined over 50 million spectators across the US, Canadian, and Japanese markets. MLB stated this marks the most-watched Fall Classic finale since the 1991 edition contest featuring the Minnesota Twins and Braves.

Television Viewership Breakdown

The Saturday epic game secured over 27 million audience members on Fox Sports channels, its Spanish-language channel and their digital services. Per Nielsen, it was the second highest-rated broadcast of the previous week.

It also stands as the top-rated World Series matchup after the 2017 edition Game 7 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Astros, which drew over 29 million. This represents a sixteen percent increase compared to the previous finale featuring the Washington Nationals and Astros, which drew 23.19M.

In the weekly rankings, the sixth game ranked fourth, the fourth game ranked seventh, Game 5 was 8th, and the third game finished in 13th position.

International Viewership Figures

In Canada, the climactic game recorded 11.6 million viewers on the Sportsnet network and the French TVA Sports channel. This made it the most-watched English program in the country since the 2010 edition Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the final contest began at 9 PM local time, it attracted 12M. This followed last Friday’s sixth game – in which World Series Most Valuable Player Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run in six frames – drew 13.1 million viewers, making it the highest-rated Fall Classic matchup on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Overall Totals and Trends

The full seven-match series averaged 15.71 million viewers on Fox, a two percent rise from the previous year’s Dodgers versus Yankees matchup. This represents the first time since 2015 and ‘16 that the World Series has seen viewership growth for two consecutive seasons.

Including the opening game broadcast on Univision, the complete US average reached 16.1 million. The total World Series viewership in Japan was 9.7 million and 8.1 million in Canada.

The full MLB Postseason on Fox, FS1 and FS2 averaged over 8 million viewers, an eight percent increase over last year and Fox’s best playoff ratings after the 2017 season.

Major League Baseball announced that the World Series was televised in 203 nations and regions by 44 media partners in 16 various tongues.
