This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government. A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties. "Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized. The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed. Wider Political Discussions Taking Place In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising. Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
