Matheus Cunha equalises only three minutes afterwards. Leeds continue their longest top-flight unbeaten run since the turn of the century. Manchester United's poor run of form persisted at Leeds' fortress, but head coach Ruben Amorim had Matheus Cunha to thank for the team not suffering even more damage against their old rivals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin directed a first-period effort against the post for the confident hosts before the American midfielder finished superbly with a low, 62nd-minute effort. At that stage, the United boss was under intense scrutiny after his side had failed to beat struggling Wolves at Old Trafford earlier in the week. However, against opponents who had two days less to prepare, the forward levelled three minutes after the opener when he ran on to a pass from introduced the Dutchman and slid a shot underneath advancing home goalkeeper Lucas Perri. It was only the South American's fourth Premier League goal since his big-money summer move and came at a time when Amorim is without several key attacking players due to a mix of fitness issues and international duty. Not that you would expect Leeds to sympathise with that given their own tight schedule. The Swiss attacker forced a full length save out of Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens with a spectacular overhead kick, and United heads were in hands when Benjamin Sesko, who is finding it hard to make an impression, turned Zirkzee's cut-back wide from close range. The goalscorer, who had a goal ruled out for offside much earlier in the match, also blasted against a post in the dying moments. The point prolongs the home side's unbeaten run to seven games, their best such streak since 2001, and takes them eight points clear of the drop zone. For the Manchester United though, it was yet another chance to move into fourth spot, albeit only for a short time, wasted. Man Utd Analysis: Amorim's Side Misfire Again With the Africa Cup of Nations reaching its latter stages, the United coach could be forgiven for hoping the involved countries make a pretty quick exit. Existing injuries to captain Bruno Fernandes and Three Lions star Mason Mount only exacerbated the impact the absence of other attackers is having on Amorim's options. It's not that the missing pair are the solution to all of the club's problems. After all, they were part of the side that experienced disappointing results earlier in the season. But without them, the boss has limited attacking options. He evidently does not trust teenager Shea Lacey or the much more experienced Joshua Zirkzee, even though the Dutch forward delivered the assist for the equaliser almost instantly after his introduction as a substitute. That leaves the Brazilian, who has now scored three goals in recent outings, and others operating out of their natural positions, alongside Sesko. On this evidence, the big-money frontman looks no better than previous struggling signings, lacking in belief and conviction in front of goal. Sesko's failure to turn home Zirkzee's cross means it is now nine games without a goal for the young striker. Leeds United Breakdown: Another Step Towards Survival After memorable victories in their last few home games, the arrival of their fiercest rivals to Elland Road was a comparatively subdued affair. True, there were moments of typical fervor, but the hostile edge was not as pronounced as in previous fixtures. Leeds' fans were more preoccupied about their side's struggle to get worthwhile possession in advanced areas for any prolonged period. The Calvert-Lewin header that clipped the post was an rare moment of threat in a congested first half. It still felt as though Leeds were finding it tough when a defensive error opened the door for the opener. For a short moment, Leeds' ecstatic fans thought they were about to secure a rare win against their old foes. However, there is a much bigger picture for the manager and the club to deal with. When they suffered a difficult run of form earlier in the season, many thought about the manager's position. Instead, he is now overseeing significant progress. The task is not completed yet but step by step, the team are getting closer to securing their survival. What Happens Next? The Yorkshire club have a Premier League trip to St James' Park in midweek, followed by the start of their domestic cup campaign next weekend. The Red Devils face a league trip to Turf Moor before also beginning their cup journey with a home tie.
